Richard D. Chassey  of Waterford, beloved husband of Sylvia K., passed away on Monday, March 21, 2016, in New London.

He was a cherished brother to the Rev. George Chassey and his wife, Mary, of W. Columbia, S.C., Elliot Chassey and his wife, Kathy, of Plymouth, Mass., and Barbara Portanova and her husband John of Middleboro, Mass. Richard was the loving stepfather to the Koenigsberg siblings, Mark, Jay, Adam and his partner, Robyne, and their predeceased sister, Kim, of upstate New York. He was also the cherished "uncle Richie" to many nieces and nephews and "grandpa" to Alex and Samantha Koenigsberg.

Richard was born in Bridgewater, Mass., on May 26, 1928. He served in the Navy and developed a passion for flying. He shared his love of travel by piloting single-engine aircraft and inviting friends and family along for the flight. Richard was a salesman for Simpson Springs and Frito-Lay for many years. He relocated from Massachusetts to Connecticut, where he met Sylvia. The couple worked and traveled together for Sylvia K's Real Estate company and were married on Sept. 26, 1999. They enjoyed their home by the ocean with his loyal canine companion, Tippy.

Richard was a talented musician who played drums and sang with the Waterford Senior Singers and in the choir, where he once served as a deacon at Crossroads Presbyterian Church. His gentle and affable nature will be deeply missed by a wide circle of friends and loved ones.

Andrew Joseph Dowd, M.D., 52, of Westerly, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Stephanie (Lynes) Dowd. Born in Springfield, Mass., he was a son of Eleanor (Hayes) Dowd of Waterford, Conn., and the late Thomas Dowd. Dr. Dowd was Chief of Surgery at South County Hospital. A graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield and The University of Massachusetts-Amherst, he received his M.D. from Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, Chicago. Dr. Dowd completed his internship and residency from Brown University Medical School Integrative Program in Surgery. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the New England Surgical Society. In his spare time, he was an accomplished watercolorist and loved to cook. However, his true love was spending time with his wife and children.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving children, John (""Jack""), Caroline, and Julia Dowd; he was also the brother of Matthew Dowd, of South Hadley, Mass., Mark Dowd, of Raleigh, N.C., and John Dowd, of South Hadley, Mass., as well their wives and children. He also leaves his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lynes, of Pascoag; and brother-in-law, John Lynes, and family, of Warwick; as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins among many. Beyond the immediate family members, Andrew leaves behind his extended work family and beloved patients throughout the community.

Patricia A. Norton   Age 72, of Waterford, died Saturday, December 12, 2015, at her home.

She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on February 20, 1943, the daughter of the late Raymond and Florence Volpi. She was employed as a realtor for Heritage Properties.

She is survived by two sons, Craig David Norton and his wife Trudy of Atlanta, GA; Mark Raymond Norton of Waterford; a sister Christine Small of Pensacola, FL; three grandchildren, Mary Pat, Joe and Loretta Norton. She was pre-deceased by her sister Liz Wolters.

Pat was born in Norfolk while her father was stationed at the Naval base but was a resident of New York, New York until the age of 16 when the family relocated to Wellesley, Massachusetts. Pat graduated from Wellesley High School in 1961.

Pat was a longtime resident of Ft. Lauderdale, FL where she relocated in 1972 with her children and husband David. It was in Ft. Lauderdale that Pat started a career in real estate sales, which she loved and continued for the rest of her life. Pat moved back to the Pleasure Beach section of Waterford in the late 90s. Pleasure Beach was her favorite place and she loved living in the location she spent every summer of her life. Pat's family has spent time at Pleasure Beach since the early 1900s and her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins continue to reside in and visit the area. Pat was a member of Great Neck Country Club, loved to play golf, spend time with friends, and most of all, spend time with her family. "Grandma Pat" will be missed by all.

2016 President's Welcome Letter

Welcome Sun Lovers!  The Summer Season is about to begin.   This is our 61st year as the Waterford Association, Inc.

As Tom Sullivan bids adieu to the Beach Manager position that he defined for more than a decade, we welcome onboard for the Summer of 2016, our new Beach Manager, Dan Fox.  Dan lives in the neighborhood with his wife and children and was excited to be hired by PB.  He’s sprucing up the beach, parking lot, and paths before Opening Day on June 10th.  Be sure to introduce yourselves and your family.  You’ll recognize him by ‘BEACH MANAGER’ printed on his red shirt.

Dan will need your help with Beach Clean-Up on 05/21 just in time for Memorial Day weekend.  Raft Day will be at the beginning of June.  Check out the website for date.

Sandy Niedjadlo, our Social Director, aka Julie McCoy, has been busy planning this year’s activities. Our opening season Cocktail Party has a new venue at Langley’s Restaurant at Great Neck Country Club.  Festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday June 10th on the deck overlooking the 18th hole. You will be treated to a wide variety of assorted hot and cold hors d’ oeuvres, 2 bar drinks, with a cash bar and unlimited soft drinks. The cost is $20.00/person.  This is an over 21, members only event (members with date at $40/couple.) We’re brewing up a Sober Uber-like Drop-off Shuttle called SUDS!

Rita’s Italian Ice will be served on the beach on July 3rd.   On July 23rd Sandy is planning an Old Fashioned Beach Picnic.  Check the website for details.

Aqualympics was a huge success last summer.  Let’s do it again! Get your family, friends, and members together to form a team to compete in this fun event on August 6th.  All ages welcome.

We bring back the PBO this summer. We are trying to have this annual event held henceforth on the second Saturday in August. Charles Benzyk is putting it together for August 13th. All members and guests are welcome. This is a fun event for golfers and duffers.  Get your foursomes ready or come as (Hands) Solo. We can create a twosome or foursome for you.   Arrive at Great Neck Country Club at 12:30. Cost: $100 Non- GNCC Club members; $45 GNCC Club Members.

The season will close with our Annual Lights Out party sometime in September.  Stay tuned for location, time and date.

Get ready for spontaneous happenings: hot dogs on the beach, Sunday Sundaes, and maybe more.  Keep an eye on our website and check your emails for these unscheduled events.

Mark your calendar for our Business Meeting on Saturday July 9th, and our annual meeting on August 20th. Meetings are held at the Goshen Firehouse and beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m.

Once again this year’s assessments, dues, and events should be paid online.  Go to our website www.pleasurebeachct.org.  Click on 2016 membership forms.   You can pick-up your badges on Beach Clean-up Day, May 21st and Opening Day, June 10th.  Karen will be set up at the entry from the parking lot to the front of the beach.

In the past 2 years we have made many improvements to our beach while your assessment has remained stable for more than a decade. We have added new lifeguard chairs and equipment, an Access Mat, and a new latrine deck.  This year we will be adding another Access Mat for the path from the parking lot to the back side of the beach. In consideration of increasing operational costs, upgrades, beach maintenance, payroll and insurance, the Board has voted to increase the Assessment by $25.00. The Board works hard at finding a balance between the costs of maintaining up to date equipment, top personnel, security, safety, and joining members to have a great experience with family and friends.

Dave Cavasino, our Treasurer, and Karen Murphy, our Financial Secretary, will be stepping down at the end of the season. Donna Calabro has stepped up to offer her services as Financial Secretary. All members are eligible to run for any Board position. If you are interested, please consider serving.  Interest about any position can be directed to any Board member or you can contact me through our Association email address: pbeachct@aol.com

Your summer week begins and ends at Pleasure Beach. How nice is that!
